Pakistan wants to get trapped in China's debt, seeks again on Silk Road projects
Between
the severe financial crisis and the sluggish economy, Pakistan is now feared
trapped in its "friend" China's "debt trap". Under the Belt
and Road Initiative (BRI), Pakistan has been hit by the $ 8.2 billion Karachi-Peshawar
Rail Project (Silk Road) proposed in Pakistan. Imran Khan's government is upset
about its costs and financial conditions.
After
Pakistan's new Prime Minister Imran Khan came to power, the resistance has
increased. He has been raising voice against rising debt on the country and he
says that the country should stay away from external debt.
Pakistan's
Planning Minister Khusro Bakhtiar had recently told the media, "We want to
develop a model that does not have all the risks in Pakistan."
The
enthusiasm for China's investment has cooled even in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and
Maldives. The new governments of these countries are also concerned about the
agreements made by the previous governments.
The
new government of Pakistan wants to revisit all contracts of BRI. Officials say
that the deals are very expensive, the bargain is not well or there is too much
inclination towards China's interest.
However,
Beijing is only ready to review the projects that have not started yet. Three
senior officials gave this information to Reuters.
